De Kazematten – Wipers Times Blonde
Wipers Times Blond is a blonde, top-fermented specialty beer that is brewed with 4 different grains and solely locally grown hops. Named after the dark-humoured “trench gazette” of the British soldiers who were based in the town, the beer is finished with 4 different herbs, including the seed of the medicinal Saint Mary’s Thistle, also called ‘blessed thistle’. This Belgian Pale Ale has a nice blend of flavours and aromas: grass, mango, peaches, herbs and a grainy maltiness. The rather sweet flavours are tempered with a distinct, yet subdued, bitterness. Its smooth, creamy quality is finished with a lingering dryness.

Belgian microbrewery De Kazematten is located in the historic Flemish city of Ypres (Ieper) and is known for it’s Wipers Times and Grotten Santé beers. The brewery is located in a 17th-century basement below the city walls, initially created to store ammunition and military equipment. The Kazematten, as the basements are known, were also used by British troops as sleeping quarters during the First World War, and were the home of the trench gazette ‘The Wipers Times’, after which this beer is named.
